On January 21, 1813, John Charles Fremont was born. John C. Fremont was raised by a man named Charles Fremont and his wife, Beverly Whiting. Fremont was a teacher of mathematics to midshipmen in 1833. In 1838 he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Corps of Topographic Engineers. He worked next to the French scientist Joseph N. Nicollet. From Nicollet, Fremont absorbed a great amount of information about science and sophisticated methods, and how to manage and organize an expedition. Fremont went on five different expeditions and was known as the “Great Pathfinder”. Fremont’s best achievement was exploring the West and making it known through readable reports and maps. On one of his journeys he made many paths
