Hammond goes through a series of economic crisis where he must develop his abilities of agricultural progressions or lose the funding of his plantation for his political ambitions. To Hammond’s surprise, and with the support of the Unionist and the Nullifiers, he is elected governor at the 1842 meeting of the legislature.
