John Hinckley was born May 29, 1955. Hinckley had an average childhood, he played sports, was popular and received good grades in school. Hinckley spent several years at Texas Tech University, but eventually withdrawn from school. In 1976 the movie "Taxi Driver" starring Robert DeNiro and Jodie Foster was released. After seeing the movie "Taxi Driver" Hinckley became obsessed with Jodie Foster, he wrote her several love letters and poems, stalked her, and called her on the phone. Hinckley wanted to reenact the movie "Tai Driver" by killing a politician to impress Foster. In October of 1980 Hinckley was arrested at an airport in Nashville, TN with several firearms. Hinckley struck President Regan in the left lung, White House Press Secretary James Brady was struck in the head (leaving him paralyzed), Secret Service Agent Timothy McCarthy was shot in the abdomen, and Washington D.C. Police Officer Thomas Delahanty. Prior to trial, Hinckley attempted to commit suicide on at least two occasions. Hinckley's trial began on May 4, 1982. Hinckley was charged with the attempted assassination of a president, assaulting a federal officer, and firearms charges. Hinckley was ordered to take several physical, psychological, and psychiatric exams. Government doctors concluded Hinckley was not insane, however he did suffer from forms of mental illness. Hinckley's attorney argued he had schizophrenia. Hinckley was so obsessed with the movie "Taxi Driver" he thought if he assassinated a politician Jodie Foster would be so impressed she would fall in love with him. On June 21, 1982, Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington,
