when Hinckley fired six shots from a.22 caliber handgun in an attempt to assassinate President Regan. Hinckley struck President Regan in the left lung, White House Press Secretary James Brady was struck in the head (leaving him paralyzed), Secret Service Agent Timothy McCarthy was shot in the abdomen, and Washington D.C. Police Officer Thomas Delahanty. Prior to trial, Hinckley attempted to commit suicide on at least two occasions. Hinckley's trial began on May 4, 1982. Hinckley was charged with the attempted assassination of a president, assaulting a federal officer, and firearms charges. Hinckley was ordered to take several physical, psychological, and psychiatric exams. Government doctors concluded Hinckley was not insane, however he did suffer from forms of mental illness.
