Gene goes back to Devon High School to find closure and to make peace with his past. John Knowle in A Separate Peace shows Gene changing through the novel. When Gene goes back to Devon, he ends up visiting two very memorable places, one being a marble staircase and most importantly, the tree. Now this is not just any tree, this tree plays one of the biggest roles in this story. This story shows the crazy events and obstacles that Gene has to go through, making him the man he is today.
