Following the Glorious Revolution of 1688-1689 Locke was able to return to England. Hobbs gained a reputation in many fildes. Locke engaged in a number of controversies during his life, including a notable one with Jonas Proast over toleration. Although he had little appreciation for the traditional scholastic philosophy he learned there, Locke was successful as a student and after completing his undergraduate degree he held a series of administrative and academic posts in the college. Machiavelli appears as the first modern political thinker, because like Hobbes he was no longer prepared to talk about politics in terms set by religious faith (indeed, he was still more offensive than Hobbes to many orthodox believers), instead, he looked upon politics as a secular discipline divorced from theology. Locke's initially stayed in London but soon moved to the home of Francis and Damaris Masham in the small village of Oates, Essex.
