In his letter, “Tulare Levels” John Muir describes his perspectives on what is happening to the San Joaquin Valley during 1875. He feels as if farmers are experimenting with the ditch soil he states, “But farmers are coming to life, experiments are being made, and the problems connected with watering of every kind of soil, are being persistently wrought out.” It concerns him that the farmers do not have much knowledge in caring and water the ditch. There are “specific irrigations” as he states that are needed to keep the land and river well. He also mentions, that companies are coming in and selling land to other farmers and people from other states.
