I will be responding to the argument presented by John Oliver on Last Week With John Oliver. Mr. Oliver did an 18 minute piece attacking Donald Trump’s plan to build a wall in between the United States and Mexico. In this piece Oliver uses a logical fallacy many times, in attacking Trumps physical appearance (ad hominem). I will be responding to Oliver’s argument, in which he says that Trump will fail in getting Mexico to pay for the wall that will be built. Oliver uses two quotes from two former presidents of Mexico, “We’re not paying for that f**** wall, he should pay for it” (Vicente Fox). While this is a funny quote to get the audience to laugh and agree with Oliver, the quote does not mean anything. Vicente Fox, is the former Mexico …show more content…
Oliver did not give enough air time so Trump could respectfully defend his plan. There are a couple ways Trump can force Mexico’s hand in paying for the wall. According to Fox 11 in Wisconsin, the US gives a combined $419 million dollars to Mexico through aid in foreign assistance and in security assistance to Mexico in 2013. This is vital aid that Mexico receives to help keep their country operable, even in their extremely rough economic times. Mexico can not afford to lose this vital support to their country, even if an old president says they will never pay for it. Trump will force their hand into paying for it. While this will mainly affect the Mexican government, Trump is also able to affect the citizens of Mexico through increasing fees for Visas. Currently, a person to get a Visa has to pay $160 dollars. Trump can increase this fee to $200 dollars and increase the revenue received from this to $16.5 million. We can use this money to then help pay for some of the wall, proposed to help stop illegal immigration from Mexico. One more example that Trump as proposed to leverage Mexico into paying for it is to stop the transferring of money outside of the US. According to a Pew Research Study, Mexico receives about $23 billion from Mexican nationals working in the US. Trump can put a stop to this, not allowing money to be wired out of the states unless the person can
