A first look into the situation , would give you a superficial , trivial perspective

about the matter .Which is the trap that Mary fell into , and woke up from, only

when she felt overwhelmed by an unidentified emotions “ the idea needled

Mary’s conscience ”

Sorrowfully , Mary , found herself in a dilemma , what seemed like a perfect plan

is now falling apart and she is facing obstacles .What happened to her win-win solution ?

What should she do ?It is time to take an in depth look into the matter , which presents a

prodigious and a fantastic opportunity to discuss and examine various and in some cases

contrasting ethical concepts and diverse philosophical theories .

On the one hand , If Mary choose the “ Buying the Bonus ” option , in this case ,

The English philosophers John Stuart states

“Actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness, wrong as they

tend to produce the reverse of happiness”

Therefore , Mary’s idea is right as it aims to maximize happiness and utility and

benefit the whole .How could it be immoral and erroneous to do what creates the

greatest good? Wouldn’t it be illogical to choose the less useful in any

situation?

On the other hand why there’s an inside feeling that keeps on bothering

Mary’s conscious ? She is restless .Something is not quite right , something smells

fishy . It appears that Mary after all is not convinced or satisfied with her plan

based on Utilitarianism .

Utilitarianism requires us to know with a high level of certainty the consequences

of our actions which is impossible for human beings to do in every case they face

.Sometimes it may work , sometimes it may not work , this puts Mary in a huge

risk .Add to that Mary is not donating the money for the right reason , her primary

goal is to benefit herself , not to improve the situation of the disadvantaged kids
