Shortly after graduation he accepted a teaching job at the Iowa State college, because they had an excellent program for science and engineering. He taught mathematics at the university. While not teaching he was working on his master's degree. John was not only an active teacher he was also an active member of the Dixie Club. A club for southerners, that's where he meet his wife Lura Meeks. Lura was an economics major. In June of 1926 he received his masters degree in mathematics. Later that same month he married Lura and they had their first child Elisa. John and his family then moved to Madison Wisconsin, because John had been accepted as a doctoral candidate. His doctoral thesis was about the dielectric constant of helium. While working on his thesis he had to do lots of complex computing, he got the opportunity to work with the Monroe calculator. While working with the Monroe machine he began to develop an interest in creating a faster computing machine. He received his PHD in theoretical physics from the University of Wisconsin. John studied under many brilliant scientists. He studied under John Hasbrouck Vanvleck, who later became a Nobel Peace
