In a philosophical discussion between John and Mustapha mond, John tells him, “Art, science-you seem to have paid a fairly high price for your happiness,”(Huxley 230). John isn't trying to be some kind of cultural snob in saying this. Mustapha mond is arguing that, “You've got to choose between happiness and what people used to call high art,” (Huxley 220). However in doing so the world state has eliminated the possibility of individuality. In focusing on the masses instead of the individual person, the world state has generalized the necessities needed for each person. The world controllers view the individual as a mear ends to their means, and in doing so, autonomy is sublimated with Neo-Pavlovian, hypnopaedic and biological conditioning …show more content…
A state? What is that? Well! open now your ears to me, for now will I say to you my word concerning the death of peoples. State is the name of the coldest of all cold monsters. Man loses himself when he becomes part of a collective without even questioning the collectives motive. Collectivism leads to the radical transformation of man and he becomes a bondsman to the omnipresent panoptic lords that rule over that state. The bondsman as well believes that because the lords are true and honest, they speak the truth... what naivete! He is ignorant of the fact he is being eaten alive! Therefore only one thing can be said to man, and it is thus, never relinquish individuality, for as Nietzsche says, “The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself,”( TWTP
