Critical Response - Week 2
(Group 1, Question A) John Winthrop uses the metaphor of “a city on a hill” to define the goal that the first set of Puritans are aspiring towards. I believe Winthrop uses the metaphor because “on a hill” means others would look up to them. He knows that “the eyes of all people are upon” them (Winthrop). Winthrop mentions how they “shall find that the God of Israel is among” them (Winthrop). I believe he continuously mentions God, not only because the Massachusetts Bay colony is centered on God, but because Winthrop saw the colony to have a potential of being a New Jerusalem. Back in 1640, there were less than 300 slaves, and only those slaves that actually ran away from their masters were punished to “serve his said master . . . for the time of his natural Life” (Slave Law in Colonial Virginia: A Timeline). Whereas by 1705 the Black population was over 16,000. At this time, all servants, “who were not Christians in their native Country” were considered slaves, and their master was given the right to punish them as they pleased (Slave Law in Colonial Virginia: A Timeline). In 1750, there was law defining what was a slave and a servant, making all slaves property. With the increase of the Black population in Virginia, the colony felt the need to tighten the laws, making the rights of African Americans evaporate. The colony felt the need to limit the amount of Africans Americans that were free and deny them the right to vote and carry a weapon. Virginian law became restrictive because they felt that African Americans were inferior to their race, and with the increase in their population, it was a necessity to make it impossible to provide them with human rights.
