Chocolat is a film about a single mother, Vianne, and her daughter, Anouk who is six-years-old, move to a small town in France and open up a chocolate shop. They open their shop near the town’s local church. The town’s people do not know how they feel about the shop especially at a time of lent which many people has chosen to give up eating sweats, including chocolate. Vianna is able to win over a few people with her warm personality and amazing chocolates, she tells people she has a gift and can tell what kind of chocolate is someone’s favorite just by looking at them. The towns mayor, Comte de Reynaud does not like this and does his best to get Vianne to shut down her shop but he is unsuccessful. One day Vianne invites a woman into the shop, Josephine, who is in a troubled relationship with her husband. Josephine is beaten badly by her husband and finally decides to leave him and eventually moves in with Vianna and begins to work at the chocolate shop. While the rivalry between Vianna and the mayor only gets worse, a group of people on boats comes into town. Roux, played by Johnny Depp is among them. While at a birthday party, Vianna and Roux sneak off Segre, the abusive husband, sets fire to one of the boats. No one is harmed in the fire but Roux decides to pack up and leave.
