"Suicide Bombers Have a Field Day." Arab News. Arab News, 21 Oct. 2013. Web. 23 Oct. 2013. . Today, if you keep up with the news in the Middle East, it is not uncommon to hear of a tragic suicide explosion occurring. However, this last Sunday was more than just a single suicide bombing attack. On October 20, 2013 there were 74 people killed due to suicide bombers. One source, a United Kingdom based watchdog, thinks there will be a rise in the death count due to the bombings saying, “there are dozens of wounded, some of them in critical condition.” Now, many people depend on prayer and positive thoughts to keep their friends and family out of the death count.
The biggest explosion occurred at a café in Baghdad, which is a primarily Shiite Amil neighborhood. A bomber allegedly drove a car full of explosives into the busy café, leaving 35 people dead. The bomber had high hopes of taking many lives during this attack, primarily due to the fact that the café and a near by juice shop are favorite places to hang out in the neighborhood. At the time, the café and juice shop were full of people. This was truly a horrific suicide. Again on the same day, eight suicide bombers were on a mission. A smaller attack took the lives of 8 police officers. In addition, according to the police captain Mohammed Ahmed Al-Rawi, there were two suicide bombers on foot, and a third driving a vehicle loaded with explosives. This was another bombing where the vehicle attacked an army checkpoint at the town entrance, and the two on foot attacked police headquarters. Still, the attacks continue. Another three bombers walking on foot and another in a loaded vehicle successfully attacked the local administrative headquarters. Lastly, in Syria, another fully loaded explosive vehicle attacked an army checkpoint in Hama. This attacked killed 31 people around the checkpoint. Sunday was a saddening day in Baghdad.
