The book Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer, one can see the dangers people will go through for the glory of being known as the one who climbed Mt. Everest. The book is a way for the reader to immerse themselves into the experiences Krakauer struggled with throughout his journey up the mountain. His determination to achieve his dream was the reason he managed to push through all the struggles that challenged him. Many people have tried to climb Everest, only a few handful have succeeded in doing so, some have even accomplished the feat twice. He struggled all the way up in many ways but managed to accomplish his dream. One of the biggest challenges that Krakauer struggled with was the depletion of oxygen at higher altitudes. Without the oxygen his ascension up the mountain was made difficult, Krakauer stated: “so little oxygen was reaching my brain that my mental capacity was that of a slow child.”(29) His determination pushed him through when he least wanted to, not even the fear of death stopped him. Krakauer witnessed the lengths people are willing to go in order to become famous. All the people that travelled with him up the mountain paid 60,000 dollars for just one chance to reach the top. They were willing to pay that much money knowing that they could end up not reaching the top or possibly dying. All of this for fame, some people would become celebrities in their hometown if they did, others would get sponsorships to pay for other adventures they may choose to take. These people were willing to risk it all just to become known, Krakauer climbed the mountain because it was one of his dreams to do so. His dream of accomplishing the impossible motivated him and pushed him on when he wanted to quit.
