He states that the faith that is acceptable to God does not consist of weak, dull, and lifeless wishes, but in His word, God insist that if we are in earnest, we will be “fervent in spirit.” Finally, Edwards stresses that true spirituality relies upon the heart’s deep feelings. A hard heart clearly means one that is not moved by religious affections, “Now by a hard heart, is plainly meant an unaffected heart, or a heart not easy to be moved with virtuous affections, like a stone, insensible, stupid, unmoved, and hard to be impressed.” By utilizing syntax, Edwards powerfully states that if true spirituality lies in the heart, then we should look for those things that tend to move our hearts. “.
