Ultimately, as the lead investigator, I would use the JonBenet Ramsey case as a critical case that included many mistakes that could have hindered the prosecution of anyone in this case. Extensive training would be done to prevent the same mistakes from ever occurring again. The crime scene was not handled properly and that later affected the investigation. Furthermore, it was Christmas and the police department was understaffed (Mohney, 2015). Instead, the family lawyered up and it took five months to get statements from the family (Mohney, 2015). That is unacceptable; going forward the police department must separate individuals and get a full statement immediately. Another mistake, in this case, happened later on, when John Mark Karr confessed to the crime and the District Attorney Mary Lacy did not know the facts of the case and wasted resources in getting Karr to Boulder. She did this even though a photo of Karr in Georgia proved the police who correctly and quickly figured out that he was not even in Colorado at the time of the crime. However, Lacy swore that DNA would show that he was the killer, which proved to be incorrect. Another loose end that should be mentioned is that of the ransom note besides the CBI investigator and the sergeant that collected the notepad as evidence, Patsy Ramsey’s fingerprints were the only ones found on the pad. Consequently, the police and the FBI did not think that it was a ransom note but little was done to act upon their suspicions.
