Jose Marti was one of the greatest heroes Cuba had. Marti was a delegate of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and developed plans to invade his homeland. Marti sought to prevent any one class or group from taking total control of the country. He also wanted to overthrow the existing leadership quickly. Marti had concerns that Cuba's neighbor would try to take over the island. Marti soon joined forces Maximo Gómez and Antonio Maceo, two nationalist generals from the Ten Years' War, and raised funds from Cuban exiles and political organizations to support their efforts. Marti was shot and killed by Spanish troops in Dos Ríos on May 19. He also fought against the threat of United States expansionism into Cuba. His murder was used as a cry for Cuban
