Joseph Mccarthy was a United states senator from Wisconsin.
He was one of the most controversial figures in American politics.
Mccarthy gained worldwide attention in the 1950’s by charging that communists had infiltrated the government. Mccarthy had conducted several investigations of communist influence on the U.S. foreign policy.Some people praised him as a patriot but others condemned him for publicly accusing them for disloyalty without sufficient evidence.Mccarthy never found any communist employed by the government. Mccarthy was elected to senate in 1946. He attracted national attention in 1950 by accusing the Department of the State of harboring communists.Mccarthy was born in Grand Chute Wisconsin on November 14th 1908 and he graduated from Marquette University. Not all the people on the list were communist. Mccarthy’s downfall finally began in October of 1953 when he started to look in to the communists secretly getting in to the military.This was the last straw for president Eisenhower who realized that this movement needed to be stopped.The army fired back at the accusations and they started sending info that Senator Mccarthy was doing things in his place in government that he was not supposed to be doing. In August,1954,a senate committee was formed to investigate censuring Mccarthy.On September 27th, the committee released a report where they all agreed that Mccarthy’s behavior as a committee chairman was “inexcusable”, “reprehensible”, “vulgar and insulting” (said World Book online). On December 2, 1954 the full senate by a vote of 67-22, made a decision to punish Mccarthy for abusing his power as a senator.
