Although there are many themes to be found in “ Abuela Invents the Zero,” the overall theme is to accept others for who they are. In the first place, the theme can be found in Judith Ortiz Cofer’s short story called “ Abuela Invents the Zero,” Ortiz says, “So we go to Kennedy to pick up la abuela, and she is the last to come out of the airplane, on the arm of the cabin attendant, all wrapped up in a black shawl… It is January, two feet of snow on the ground, and she’s in wearing a shawl over a thick black dress. That’s just the start.” ( Ortiz, 3) In this event, Constancia (Connie) is getting impatient while having to wait for la abuela. Once her abuela comes out Constancia is annoyed with her abuela
