Julia Marks is unusually short for her age, so short in fact, she can fit through the dog door at home. While Julia only planned to spend her summer by mourning the loss of her dog, Ramon, and corresponding with her friends, Kaylee and Piper, who are at camp, her mom forced her to audition for a play, The Wizard of Oz, at the local university. It turns out Julia does indeed make the play, which completely takes her by surprise, and during the first rehearsal she meets the director, Shawn Barr, and an adult with dwarfism named Olive. Because of her personality, Olive becomes Julia’s new role model, sorry Eleanor Roosevelt (you’ve been demoted from your position), and she inspires Julia enough to start a scrapbook of the play. Though Julia resisted, as she expected it to be like a little kid’s Halloween costume, she was thoroughly astonished, and beyond pleased, when she saw the result. When she wore the outfit to rehearsal, Shawn Barr absolutely adored it and decided to promote Julia to lead dancer for taking “initiative”, though all she did was ask Mrs. Chang for some of her flowers, which spiraled into this whole thing. Overwhelmed, Julia decides to quit the play, but Olive convinces her to stay. This is quite fortunate, because Julia is later given a second role of winged monkey with Olive as a companion. After rehearsal, Julia visits Mrs. Chang with Olive and asks her to make the rest of the costumes for the cast, to which she agreed, on the condition that she gets to be a flying monkey as well. At first, there is a bit of a dispute over her request because Shawn Barr is concerned for her safety, as she is 76 years old, and it’s risky to hoist her up in the air, with nothing to catch her if she gets unattached from the line. But he finally agrees, as it is clear, Mrs. Chang’s skill is exceptional, and a bonus, other than her flying monkey request, the price of the costumes is
