The Civil Rights Movement lasted from 1950-1970. The Civil Rights Movement is about people fighting for their rights. Many people protested, boycotted, and participated in sit-ins. Among those people was Julian Bond, a soon-to-be influential civil rights activist. When Bond was born on January 14, 1940 in Nashville, Tennessee, he started his path to becoming a very influential part of the Civil Rights Movement. When Bond was only twenty years old, he helped to form and lead the SNCC. Bond was also the first of eight African American men to be elected to the Georgia House of Representatives. Bond was just twenty-eight years old, eight years later, and was nominated for vice president in 1968, but he was too young to serve so he decided to withdraw his name from the ballot. Bond was the first president of this organization for eight years, but even after he was no longer the president he stayed on the board of directors until his death. Bond was in the Georgia House of Representatives for four terms. Bond was the NAACP’s chairman from 1998 to 2010, five years before he died. Bond died from complications of vascular disease at the age of seventy-five. Bond served with the NAACP as the chairman for 12 years. NAACP stands for The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, as you could imply they work to advance justice for colored people. Some of its members include Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King, Jr., Mary White Ovington, and Rosa Parks. In order to bring about change the NAACP waged legislative battles, organized mass protests, and produced artistic material. Along with being a part of the NAACP, he was also one of the founders of the SNCC. The SNCC is the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, which helps to get young protesters into the equation of the Civil Rights Movement.
