Julius Caesar Essay

Within the story of Julius Caesar, Marcus Brutus struggles with himself on whether to kill his close friend Julius Caesar. He reasoned that if he killed him then he would be stopping any chance of tyranny against the Roman people from Julius Caesar’s ambitious ways; yet he is very loyal to Julius so killing him would be difficult to accomplish. After some manipulation, he comes to the conclusion that the only way to save the Roman people from a life of bondage and misery is to assassinate Caesar. For example, in the play while Brutus is alone in his garden he voices his concerns by saying “He would be crown'd:...The abuse of greatness is, when it disjoins Remorse from power: and, to speak truth of Caesar, I have not known when his affections sway'd More than his reason” (II,1,6-11). This quote expresses Brutus’ doubt about Caesar being crowned king and how he may change after his new found power. Within the story of Julius Caesar, Brutus’ good nature to defend the people of rome not only lead to him joining the conspirators, but ultimately lead to his downfall. He was so racked with grief with the events that have occurred that he takes his own life. Out of all the characters in Julius Caesar, Brutus is considered the tragic hero of the story, “He is most classically the Roman patriot putting “the general [good]” (2.1.12) before his valued self-control and his esteemed Caesar” (Jorgensen). He put others needs before his and is even declared the most noble of the conspirators by Marc Antony because his intentions truly were to protect the Roman people, even if it meant sacrificing his friend.
