During 1950s, he has been giving seventy lectures throughout the country and Europe. He was asked by the leading citizens of Rochester to give speech on their July Fourth Celebration. One of them is Harriet Beecher Stowe, a female author who had long been fighting for the slave’s freedom.
The purpose they asked Douglass to give speech on that day is to promote their anti-slave activities. Douglass will be a great example of how capable a black men is. He used to be a slave for the twenty-first years of his life. Now, he is a passionate writer and orator. The polished image of Douglass speaking in front of the Rochester Corinthian Hall will help to break the prejudice that black people are dump. Looking at Douglass’s image, people will think “No, that is not true at all.” They will start to notice the contribution of the Negro on the country. Even though being in fetters, they teach each other to read and write. Another reason is that even though Douglass was a former slave, he does not express any bitterness. He has proven himself as a passionate and thoughtful person. Any other man will not be able to influence people better than him.
