Whether it was a math teacher that may have said don’t pursue anything in math because you’re not good at it or our own worst critic…. ourselves that say nope their right it’s too hard. Or when we may have found something challenging and didn’t get it right the first time so we just gave up. I want to remind you that for those that say you can’t there are those that believe in you and say that you can. I recall when I decided to give teaching a try, I applied but never got a call to interview many times because well….I lacked the experience and did not have a degree in education. I eventually landed the opportunity when Mr. Sherwood an assistant principal at Ernesto Serna gave me a chance. Even when a lab experiment went terribly wrong during intersession tutoring, when the middle school hallway filled with blue smoke and the school was evacuated due to the fire alarms going off….he still believed I’d be a good science teacher. Then there was Ms. Ayala, she approached me with the idea of starting a drumline here at Sanchez Middle and thought I should teach it. My initial response was no. I had reasons…or should I say doubts about my abilities to do what she had requested…doubts such as playing in a drumline and teaching it are two different things.
