Musicals written for Broadway are like a cake; some are made and presented without regard to whether or not what they are presenting is quality. Some of today’s writers just follow the recipe that has worked in the past and take a movie and bake it into a nice Broadway cake that gets the job done and their paycheck filled but doesn’t fulfill a deeper artistic meaning. This is one way in which Off-Broadway differs from Broadway; their cakes tend to be more experimental and more adventurous. They might change the recipe or bake a pie instead, and it is not to say that Off-Broadway or Broadway cakes are better than one another, but it’s about the atmosphere in which each has created for their cakes to bake. Stephen Sondheim is one baker who is constantly finding new ways to twist old recipes and this is what has raised him to the top of Broadway, his versatility. He is constantly working with new people, getting new blood around him with fresh ideas and creating an environment where people feel safe to work. This means it does not lend itself to the experimental and the mind churning pieces Broadway had once had because its not what its audiences are look for. A large majority of audience members go to the theatre for a fun night out, to escape from real life and fall into the world of the play. While on the other hand off-Broadway theatres allow for more experimental, more thought provoking work because its audiences know that’s what they’re in for. Those theatres have subscribers who know they might be coming to see a “work-in-progress” show, this gives the production team more time to work with their show and find out what works and what does
