In the 2009 book, “Justice: What’s The Right Thing To Do?”, by Michael J. Sandel, he claims that society needs to be more engaged in civil life. By openly expressing one’s opinions, there’s a greater chance that backlash and resentment can be prevented from building up. All throughout history, people have been expressing their opinions on different civil matters such as Women’s rights and the current issues on gun control. I agree that it’s important to openly express one’s opinions and beliefs as it allows change to occur; however, there are times when an opinion shouldn’t be expressed especially when it involves family.
The United States of America was founded on the belief that everyone has the right to their own beliefs and traditions.

Resentment breeds resentment which is why it’s important to express one’s opinion while keeping an open mind on the opinions of others. During the time of the women’s suffrage movement, many women could no longer stand to tolerate being treated as lesser citizens of the United States. They took to the streets to express their opinions in an effort to make a change. Often times, the women would do marches to promote their cause. However, there were many people against the movement that would take to throwing tomatoes or physically attacking the women. After so long of having the men in supremacy, the idea that women could be equals was foreign and unnatural to many of the men. The men resented the fact that women might be able to change their status, which led to the women resenting the suppression of men. It began a cycle of resentment and if the opinions of the women had been respected as they should have been, then this cycle would never have begun, no matter how short lived it might have been. Each opinion should be valued and if the women’s opinions would have been valued, it wouldn’t have taken so long for women to get voting rights and the government wouldn’t have had to spend their time and money on a matter that should have been easy to resolve. This was a prime example of citizens becoming more involved in civil life as it was a matter that affected the lives of everyone, whether it be directly or indirectly. If the women hadn’t expressed their opinions, then nothing would have changed and their resentment towards their unjust treatment might have grown and grown until there was a negative
