The prevalence of guns in the United States is very high, it is estimated that there is nearly one firearm for every person who lives in our country. Each year, approximately eight million guns are produced worldwide, and over half are purchased by Americans. It is also estimated that nearly seventy percent of all homicides in the United States involve firearms. With the accessibility and crime rate associated with firearms being so high, gun control today is a highly debated issue. Opponents, on either side, can make justifiable arguments. Pro-gun advocates can easily argue that the gun ownership law in Kennesaw Georgia, is responsible for the reduced crime rate and improvement in the city’s safety and security. A person wanting to obtain a firearm, must be at least eighteen years old, have a valid identification, and pass a back ground check. Tennessee should mandate that all firearms be registered, in the same fashion that we register motor vehicles. Firearm registration laws, would also require a firearm to be re-registered if ownership was transferred. The existence of these laws, would enable law enforcement to prosecute violent criminals, by making it easy to track the last known owner of the firearm, providing a probable increase in the rate of solved crimes that involve a firearm. This recordkeeping system would also ensure accountability for firearm owners and discourage unlawful sales. By registering guns, we are increasing personal accountability; knowing that a firearm is registered linking the individual to the specific weapon, will safeguard gun owners to take more precautions with their firearms. Accountable owners, will likely to store their guns securely to avoid loss or accidents, and are more likely to report them
