Eugenia Collier’s “Marigolds” is about a young girl who is living through the Great Depression and was trying to find understanding of becoming a compassionate woman. The narrator’s voice is remorseful and despondent and is revealed throughout the story using diction, imagery, and juxtaposition. In the story she experiences anger, compassion, and fear.
As the story reveals, she is explaining how she remembers her childhood life with Miss Lottie’s marigolds. For example, Lizabeth describes the marigolds as “a brilliant splash of sunny yellow against the dust.” This quote is a juxtaposition explains how happy and sad are written compared. This symbolizes how the appealing marigolds are compared to the arid, amorphous
