The nurses at this facility could benefit from the leadership, communication, and mutual support aspects of, TeamSTEPPS. If the evening nurse had been educated in these ideas she might have been proactive about the situation, taking more of a leadership role. If she had the same ideals of mutual support she would have looked out for her team and properly reported the situation to the oncoming nurse. The nurses being properly educated with the SBAR protocol would improve communication during the report. Some key statements of TeamSTEPPS such as, "I am concerned" or "I am uncomfortable" may have captured the doctor's attention during the first conversation and she may have initiated needed medical treatment earlier. All medical staff would benefit from the TeamSTEPPS program and in turn the patients.
