Over her career she has shown her aversion to discrimination, violence, and hate. Each and every choice she makes is led by personal experiences and a direct viewpoint. One of her notable choices was the decline to pursue the death penalty. The death penalty is a sentence given by a federal jury which enlists the convicted to be punished by death. “My entire career I have been opposed – personally opposed – to the death penalty,” Harris said. “And that has never changed.” Her current campaign notion states she will “...seek a federal moratorium on the death penalty...” No matter how dehumanizing the crime was, their punishment was not to be so severe as death. Another of her opposition was discrimination. Death penalties have been shown to be discriminatory, a factor in the decline. “I’ve long been opposed to the death penalty. It is deeply immoral, irreversible, and ineffective. And if we are going to transform our country’s broken criminal justice system, we must be fearless — unafraid to speak hard truths. Last week, the state of California issued a moratorium on the death penalty — a system that has proven time and again to be an abject failure. It has wasted taxpayer money, has not kept our communities safe, and has discriminated against those with mental illness and people of color. This is an important step forward.
