The treaty of Kanagawa caused awareness to Japan as additional countries drew in to connect with Japanese officials. When western powers began to pressure Japan for trade connections, residents were quite confused when one side wanted to change to the modern world and the other wanted to stay the same. In 1858, the Tokugawa government signed and unequal treaty with 5 other European powers including the United States. This treaty was called the Harris Treaty, named after Townsend Harris, a diplomat and Politician of the United States. Townsend spent two years convincing Japanese leaders that the British were going to demolish Japan without America’s help, clearly then, lead Tokugawa Bakufu to sign the treaty of Amity and Commerce out of fear.
