For this issue my interpretation that Freiberg is saying is that liberals expect confrontation and conflict, but on the other hand, realists believe the relationship is stable and peaceful. Liberalists believe in pacifying power of Kantian Tripods.
Liberalists are individuals who are rational and able to understand the basic laws of nature and human society. John Locke believes that society is not created, fault lies inadequate institutions or/ and corrupt environment. As discussed in class the evolution of liberalism is credited to Montesquieu and Kant. Liberalism also elucidates the Kantian Tripod which is democratic peace, free trade, and international institutions. Kantian Tripod #1 is the democratic system which believes in pluralist domestic politics, checks and balances, and separation of powers. Kantian Tripod #2 deals with free trade which, maintains the idea if mutual and complex independence and high economic costs if trade is disrupted. Kantian Tripod #3 is about international institutions, we have a collective security, international organizations, international laws, rules, treaties, and national agreements. Economic exchange between the US and China have dramatically increased since the 1970s. In addition to economic stability, liberalists believe that trade is a big factor in peace, not only that but also, peace is going to come with international institutions.
