In 1986, Katherine retired after 33 years at Langley Laboratory. She has authored and co-authored 26 research reports. She made the most of the limited educational opportunities for African American’s and proved to the Space program that all people are equal. During her time at NASA, she successfully sent someone into space, the moon, and into orbit. Katherine received the NASA lunar orbiter Spacecraft and Operations team award in 1967, and later in 1997 she was awarded National Technical Association's ‘Mathematician of the Year’. She receives letters from school age kids all the time giving her credit for what she’s done and asking her questions. Most recently, on November 16, 2015, president Obama awarded Katherine Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor to receive.w
