Think about past books that you read.Did you notice that many of them have a setting? Many texts for our quarter four theme show the reader how the setting is the backbone of the text.In the story “the last dog” by Katherine Peterson, the setting of the text impacts the characters,plot,and overall theme of the text.The setting conveyed the theme of beating the odds of low success.

In the text The Last Dog, the characters are impacted by the setting.The story takes place in a world in which most of the resources and things we have in our current year are extinct. For example,Brock states that he remembers things like the sun, trees, and heat from virtual lessons.This infers that he has never seen them in person.In this world,the environment effects his knowledge of the world around him. The setting effects the background characters as well.This is most evident when Brock mentions that he wants to go outside the dome. This was shown in the line: “When he’d mentioned it to others, they had laughed, but there was a hollow sound to the laughter.”. This shows the reader that civilians that live in the pod find the idea of leaving the pod unusual.The text showcases that the setting can affect character mindsets and the way they act.

The plot of the text mainly focuses on him and his new understanding of the world. For example,the beginning of the text begins with Brock leaving the pod for the first time.The setting is the main reason as to why he meets Brog in the first place.This shows that the setting effects what happens in the situations in the text. Another example of the setting effecting the plot is the finding of Brog on page 7.About half of the text focuses on the study of Brog,who may be the last puppy on earth.
