Samuel Lambert Mrs. Nelson English IV 3 April, 2024 Who is Katherine Trask? Marrying the devil doesn't sound appealing, but this is exactly what Adam Trask does. East Of Eden was written in 1952 by John Steinbeck. This allegory is set in the early 1800s, but Steinbeck gives the story some parallels to the garden of Eden. Cathy, also known as Kate and Catherine, is obviously the devil. There is some good in her, but the bad overwhelms her. So what good is there? Kathy is one of the most polarizing characters, for better or for worse. She is one of the main drivers of the plot and her interactions with the characters sets many things in motion. There is very little to like about Kathy. She is beautiful enough to be noticed and does stand out. They want to look, talk, dress, and act exactly like all of the others. Cathy wants none of this. She never conformed to dress or conduct. She wore whatever she wanted to” (Steinbeck, 73). She is obviously an evil character, so what are some things that make her bad? Cathay is the most evil person in the book by far. When she was born, she was born with a malformed soul. She is hateful, narcissistic, and manipulative. She learned how to sexually manipulate people and she first did this when she was 14. She has 2 boys whipped after her mom finds her tied to a pole with her skirt up. She also caused one of her teachers to commit suicide. She then murders her family by burning the house down. She is presumed dead and she changes her name. She almost becomes a prostitute for in Boston, but is taken as a mistress by Mr. Edwards. She tortures him by threatening to leave, but he soon learns she murdered her parents. He almost murders her, but she crawls to the Trask house and Adam nurses her back to health. She lays with her brother and has two boys that are not Adam’s. She then leaves and eventually owns a
