Starting out she majored as a sculptor, but she like others, myself included, found little to no woman artist talked about or even seen in Art History. I am currently taking Art History and while my teacher hints that there were female artist during the Renaissance, names seem limited. Wininger was sweet enough to give me a book on exactly this topic of the male dominated view of the historical arts called The Guerrilla Girls’ Bedside companion to the History of Western Art. The book emphasized that it is not that female artist were around, though women were oppressed and not always allowed to explore the field as freely as their male counterparts, but that they are hidden away by scholars who claimed art by woman weren’t up to par with mens. The book addresses many different misconceptions of female artist throughout history, and their own struggle to be recognized as such. It's astonishing that such an idea never occurred to me, so ingrained this version of Art History that is all male. Never had I questioned why all the famous artist from the Classical past were men on the notion of that just how it was, while hidden away were the female artist not recognized in history for their talent. This greatly applies to how Professor Wininger see feminism, That all women should be equal but aren’t equal. That woman don’t have the same opportunities, and many time the ones woman do have can be hidden or invisible
