I think that the conflict between the clinical manager of the operating room and the surgeon is an expressed struggle between these two parties due to incompatible goals. The surgeon, Dr. Licata wants to go against publicized and accepted standards of best practice in order to wear his preferred head coverings of cloth skullcaps. While clinical manager of the operating room, Kathie Miller is obligated by moral and ethical standards to abide by acceptable proven standards. It is pertinent for Kathie to do what is permissible by the accrediting agency and do what is best for the patients. Kathie relies heavily on proven studies carried out by bipartisan agencies to give accurate information on surgical site infection risk based upon trialed procedures. Dr. Licata the surgeon, has an attachment to his cloth skullcaps that he personally buys and wears fashionably decked out for each holiday or major sporting event. Dr. Licata feels particularly fond of these skullcaps not only because of the monetary investment he has in them but also because of the fulfillment to have personal belongings and the self-esteem they offer him when patients and other staff comment on his expansive collection. Kathie is very by-the -book and pays strict adherence to established policies and procedures. To Kathie, this is a very black-and-white situation, the rules say that it is bad practice so it should not be practiced. Kathie also has the added responsibility to maintain authority over many surgeons who would jump at the chance to use the excuse of her allowing one surgeon to go against policy so why are the rest not allowed? This is probably a breach that Kathie must be cautious
