The attitude of Kaydian Barrett was not the most desirable in her childhood and adolescent years. She was an individual who always seemed to find herself in mischief and the words that came out of her mouth allowed her to make frequent visits to those in higher authority. Ms. Barrett had a reputation that would cause people to keep their distance from her. However, their were a hand full of teachers that would keep very close to her, whether she liked it or not, and one of them was her band teacher.
In band she had a difficult time listening to dear, old Mr. Hankle because he was someone who she could not faze and whatever smart remark she had, he came back with a quick response whether it be verbal or gestural. Her initial impressions of his replies were unfavorable but as time went on, a relationship started to build, and Kaydian regarded him as one of her favorite educators. In one of her many lessons, Mr. Hankle was harping on about practicing and how she needed to keep practicing and never stop. I was extremely prepared due to my previous experiences during undergrad when asked to teach music for the Paterson Arts program and assist the after-care program for preschoolers. The notes I took when teaching during undergrad are definitely benefiting, especially the “divide and conquer” technique. The students I had did not have much exposure to singing and the lesson plans I had created had to be altered. I was in a similar situation when I had to make the learning experience for my students an enjoyable one.
