Keep The World Safe

On Tuesday February 29, 2000 in Mount Morris Township, Michigan a six-year old boy shot his classmate to death in their first grade classroom. Police reports show that the two youngsters had an argument the previous day. A single shot was fired inside the classroom at Buell Elementary School around 10 a.m. The young boy said he brought the gun to school to frighten her but accidentally fired a shot. ‘’We’ve had other school children take to elementary schools before . . . but it never went this far with it. Since last year there have been fifteen different school shootings in which many students have died without any reason. Who should we blame for this? Should we blame the parents, teachers, schools or our government? Regulating guns is a necessary action that needs to be taken in order to save lives. A general mistake within the debate regarding the issue of gun control is that by having gun control laws the government is in essence making the lives of United States citizens more complicated and more restricted. This is an over generalized mistake that is used by anti-gun control groups. Gun control has two sale purposes, to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and to help save lives.
In class we are reading an article about a man named John Lott who believes that guns should be given to all adults as a self-defense weapon. In one article he quotes ‘’A criminal is less likely to attack a potential victim when he or she fears that victim might be armed.’’ Now to me I agree with that response, but then I heard another quote from a man named Dr.Arthur L. Kellerman. He stated “The odds that a home will be the scene of a homicide are substantially greater if there is a gun in the home.’’ He is the head of emergency medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, who led a team that studied shootings in Memphis, Galveston and Seattle. This can only prove so much if a doctor who studies shootings almost every day and knows that people who own guns are the ones who eventually end up injuring themselves or others. Most homeowners who even have a gun aren’t properly trained or experienced enough to even handle a gun in a robbery situation.
Guns in this world only create more problems for people of all ages especially the younger kids. Why would anyone want to raise their child in such violent cities where guns are known as the biggest threat? Even keeping a gun in your house for self-defense is clearly just as dangerous as a robber trying to break in. ‘’On average, the gun that represents the greatest threat is the one that is kept loaded and readily available in a beside drawer.’’ This quote said by Dr. Kellerman really should stick to your mind. As said in the beginning of this discussion there was a shooting in an elementary school because the child brought home a gun from his
