When presenting information about the containment thesis, George Kennan, and his impact on the foreign policy of the United States during the Cold War, there is much that must be explored and learned beforehand. Because of this, I plan on tackling my thematic research assignment by reading relevant books and researching online for information on these subjects in order to develop a thorough understanding of the Cold War time period. More specifically, I plan on reading books about Kennan, his “long telegram,” the containment thesis, and how the mentioned things impacted United States foreign policy during the Cold War and on looking up online sources about these topics. For one to be able to say whether Kennan’s recommendations were followed as outlined, it is imperative that they know the specific language of the “long telegram” was and what the United States government specifically did during the Cold War. One must also know how Kennan viewed Russia and why he believed that his suggestions had been misunderstood and misinterpreted. It is also important that one learns how Kennan expressed his ideas and how the United States utilized his ideas to justify its actions during the Cold War.
