Kennan's Observation Of Power In America

Kennan’s most compelling observation I would have to say is the observation, he has towards power in America. Power is an important part of any country and the deals in foreign policy and also its economic policy. Keenan makes power seem as if it is one of the major parts of government and it has proved to do that in the United States, Soviet Union (Russia), and many powerful countries throughout history and also in the world today. Keenan describes that power exists in a lot of places in America. He includes the police establishment, court of law, and also in American institutions. He compares the ways of power of the United States to the Communist’s way of power. Kennan says “though not nearly to the degree of the Marxists”. This is comparing the ideas of Americans to the thoughts and ideas of Karl Marx, which is the father of communism. Karl Marx believes in strict government by giving all the power to the government. Marx also believes power can keep the economy safe while still running a stable government and that has worked throughout history for many nations. Kennan describes these as “Underworld groups, criminal gangs, or informal associations of a vigilante nature capable of terrorizing their fellow citizens in one degree or another”. These groups are one of the many things that corrupt the country. These many groups do harmful things to the country and due to the country, not having enough power to stop them these many “terrorizing” gangs harm the people in many ways. Keenan believes that power is important in keeping the economy safe and stable. The better usage of many of the power forces can help to stop this, but can’t due to the restrictions the United States has on the amount of power these groups
