In 2005 “Kitten's First Full Moon” was awarded with the Caldecott Medal, and award that is given to the best picture book of the year. Kevin Henkes wrote and illustrated the story, only in shades of black, white, grey, and some rose undertones. In the story, the small kitten mistakes the moon in the sky to be a bowl of cream. The moon, the flowers, the fireflies' lights and the kitten's eyes create a comforting circle motif. This is a sweet children's book that is aimed at the younger grades of elementary school. There is very little text scattered throughout the book, so the illustrations really help keep the rhythm and flow of the story going. The art was done through colored pencils and gouache, a technique using opaque pigments ground
