The Keystone Habit

In Charles Duhigg’s The Power of Habit, Duhigg described the importance of self-discipline and showed that willpower is the single most important keystone habit for success. His concept of willpower helped me understand that self-discipline has a bigger effect on academic performance than intellectual talent. (Duhigg 131) I learned that willpower and self-discipline will determine how much effort we put into academic studies, and how willpower is a learnable skill. Duhigg also described that willpower isn’t just a skill. It’s a muscle, like the muscles in our arms or legs, which tells me that we should train this “muscle”, so it will become a useful habit in our

The way I strengthen my willpower is to encourage myself that I need to pass this course in order to move onto the next level and I need to perform this habit for future academic courses. In order to force myself into study mode, I would turn off my television, turn off my music, silent my cellphone and shut my door. These techniques will restrict myself from anything that doesn’t relate to my studies. There by helping me to improve my discipline and developed my good studying habit. I was able to read through textbooks and finish homework early so I could watch television and listen to my music before it’s time to go to bed. My reward wasn’t only the free time I had watch television and listen to music, and most importantly, I was able to keep up with my classmates and be on the same page as they were. The feeling after I’ve studied extra hard and finished all of my homework with a great understanding of the material is priceless, and that is when I know that I’ve successfully trained my good habit as a muscle in our body. So my willpower could occur without me having to think about it. (Duhigg …show more content…
So if someone offered their homework to us and let us copy, it does sound really nice and attractive but it’s very important for us to make sure that we understand the material throughout the course which is by doing the homework on our own. Copying someone’s homework does not help us learn and it could hurt us academically in the future. In Tim’s situation, he did not have the right mindset, which was to study extra hard because of his lack of English skill. Instead, he created a bad habit which was copying homework from our classmates. Tim wanted to spend time with his friends after school and even though he knew that copying someone’s homework isn’t the right thing to do. Even if he acknowledges the importance of self-discipline, but still he won’t take action to adjust his routine because copying someone’s homework was already his bad habit. What would I do to help him change his bad habit is to explain the importance of self-control. Motivate him and tell him that he can do it. Show him the things I would do to develop strong willpower, such as making the free time after finish homework assignments as a reward, and the techniques I would use to stay focus such as turning off electronic devices and stay in a quiet place.
