People’s assessment of other people’s language use has a profound effect on those communicating, mostly when there is a notable difference in the speaker’s level of skill with the language being spoken. Discrimination stemming from these judgements have been observed, in regards to the experiences of Robyn Kina and Daisy Li, to have an impact socially and physically. This language discrimination creates a social disadvantage for those expressing English in accented or non-standard forms.

Kina most notably suffered significant, physical impacts and emotional isolation – “I felt the odds were stack against me” (Thomas, 2006) - due to the discrimination of the courts resulted in her incarceration despite not having heard Kina’s reasons for the indecent. While the discrimination faced by Li did not manifest in such an immediately identifiable way, she was no less affected. Li was discriminated against and socially isolated in day-to-day dealings in her life.
