The student I chose for this case study is a Kindergartner at ABC Elementary
School. For the purposes of this project I will refer to him as John Smith. John is a bright, outgoing 5-year-old student who has one sibling, a younger sister. John is a typical 5-year-old. He attended preschool before Kindergarten. His mom plays an active role in his learning by reading with him at home. John does not receive any support in his academics. He takes part in class discussions and has general knowledge and vocabulary. John is willing and excited about learning.

John’s motivation level depends on whatever is going on in the classroom. If the topic is interesting to him, he is highly motivated and performs well. His ability to focus seems related to his motivation level but overall he is an attentive

He self-corrected and examined the text when something does not seem right. He read with little hesitation and has good sight word recognition. John seemed confident on the first two passages, Vegetables and This Turtle. He felt anxious reading the last passage, Big and Little.

Summary of Reading Comprehension Assessments

John understands what he read and can name the main idea of the text. He can answer text dependent questions very well and he can think beyond the text. John can identify key details of the story and summarize it. He is good at self-questioning and inferring as he reads. I would like for him to relate background knowledge and visualize the text more.

Writing Sample

According to John’s writing samples he is in the Emerging stage of writing. He uses pictures for meaning. He attempts to write sentences with letter sound connections. However, his text is sometimes difficult to read. John often use resources around the classroom to help him spell out a word however he does not use these resources as often as he needs
