Arthur Szyk was a patriotic hero disguised as an artist. His paint brush was his sword. The artwork Arthur exposed the actuality and emotion of the Holocaust to many people. Arthur Szyk didn’t die only as an artist, but also as a political and historical figure of inspiration for the Jewish people, and many who undergo atrocities through his controversial work. Szyk was born in 1894, in the Russian upper-middle-class empire of Poland. It is believed that Szyk’s first drawings were at the age of 6 of the Boxer Rebellion in China. Yet, at age 15, his work already had keen potential skills, and he had created his own feel for tone and volume that are featured in his most famous pieces. It was at 15 as well, when Arthur’s father Solomon Szyk discovered his talent, and became a committed supporter, sending Arthur to the Académie Julian, a private art school in Paris, one of the most elite art schools in Paris during his time. …show more content…
Szyk’s exclusive image and early works and experimentations sprouted from this time period. In 1914, Szyk was recruited into the Russian army during WWI, serving the German front, fighting in the Battle of Lódź. Szyk had created a number of postcards displaying battle-weary Russian soldiers, one including an injured soldier leaning on his comrade, his severely bandaged leg elevated, and his arm in a sling. Both soldiers stare wearily out of the left side of the setting. Their ill-fitting uniforms, and the photograph-like depiction of their faces individualizes their misery.
