As he was walking along the St. Lawrence River he realized that people living on farms where not farming at all. Farms are to be used to grow crops and use animals for food and materials. Instead of paying attention to the farms and growing crops, they where focussing on hunting, trapping and trading. They chose to not work on the farms because it did not make as much money as other things they did. Another reason that people were not taking care of there farms is that they where not trained too. The agriculture was horrible, there where no crops and not very healthy animals to provide furs and other products for the colony. Talon had a goal to make sure that the colony could always produce enough food for the people living in it. He had to think of a plan. He decided to go on his own farm and test out seeds, crops and other animals. He figured out what works best for the climate in New France. He did this so that he could give the people living on the farms resource that will work for the type of land that they need to work on, tools to help with the resources given and teach them how to use these new things. In 1664 Talon started a shipbuilding yard with the help of Frances money. They found high quality iron from Trois-Rivières. With that iron they started a small iron foundry that produced cannons, cannon balls, stoves, hammers and pots. These resources where sold at the local market. Talon also opened a brewery. The brewery made around 40,000 barrels of beer a year. New France did not need all of the beer produce so half of those barrels where shipped away to other countries and New France made money of off this trading. Talon also opened a shoe factory and grew the fishing department. He also got people to spin so that the wool from sheep could be used to make into wool that could be turned into clothing. King Louis XIV realized that there where many goods being produced in New France. Instead of being happy that New France was quickly developing he got very upset. Talon was very upset at the King’s reaction he has always wanted to make New France into a great place with many industries.
