Congo, which had a forced labor system, had an inferior labor system because the king was very egotistical and millions of citizens suffered through the act of maiming. First, the King of Belgium was an extremely egotistical man. According to Sarah, “The people of Congo had to gather crops for the King” (Sarah). This evidence reveals that the servants and citizens needed to gather crops for the king only. The community's hard work and suffering only benefited the king as he wanted all of the money and power for himself. The King of Belgium was like the dictator in Congo, so everyone ought to respect him and obey his orders. Anything could happen to them, they could die, become hurt, obtain sickness, and no one would care about it. In this system everyone is fighting for themselves, others don’t have time to help each other, in that if they do then they might risk dying or getting a limb chopped off. This quote alludes to how demented the King was. All of the things he did to these poor people working for him were outrageous. He would torment them with violence, and he would make them work for him out of fear. When this quote says “widespread atrocities” they are talking about how the King would cut off people’s limbs or even kill them on the spot if they did not complete their work for the day. The King was crazy and everyone there knew it. For example, if one worked all day and did not meet their quota or daily amount of work by the end of the day, King Leopold would abuse them as he would not gain money or power from them.
