King Romulus is the first known king and founder of Rome who ruled from 753 to 715 B.C. He expanded the city of Rome’s boundaries to include the four main hills Capitoline, Aventine, Caelian, and Quirinal. There are many famous legends describing the life of King Romulus. For example, some say that Romulus and his twin brother Remus, were raised by wolves. Another famous story is “The Rape of Sabine Women” which describes how he invited many Sabine women to a festival. The festival came to a sudden end when Romulus seized the unmarried women by force and claimed them as brides. Romulus is one of the most important kings because he founded Rome. The second king of Rome was Numa Pompilius reigned from 715 to 673 B.C. Unlike Romulus, Numa was not a warrior king, but a religious, cultural figure. Numa Pompilius founded the temple of Janus and other priestly colleges. Legends state that he reformed the calendar and added January and February. This meant that there was 360 days in the year. Tarquinius Priscus expanded the senate by 100 people hoping to strengthen his position of king. He built the the great Temple of Jupiter on Capitoline Hill. It is also said that he laid building plans for the Circus Maximus. His military ability was tested by an attack from the Sabines.
