Change Theory

Dr. Kotter’s 8-step Process for Leading Change is a methodology that combines the success factors and straightforward guidance for effective change management (Kotter International, n.d). The Kotter’s Change Theory implicated 8 individual steps: (1) create a sense of urgency, (2) build a guiding coalition, (3) form a strategic vision and initiatives, (4) enlist a volunteer army, (5) enable action by removing barriers, (6) generate short-term wins, (7) sustain acceleration and (8) institute change (Kotter International, n.d). Implementations of described steps allow easy application of the proposed changes.
Step 1, create a sense of urgency, has been established to convince the others to understand proposed change is needed. This step is suggested through a motivating statement presenting the significance for an immediate action (Kotter International, n.d). The OAHH has been facing the issue of students’ weight, which in turn increases chances of poor health outcomes. The immediate action is necessary to decrease the likelihoods of developing preventable illnesses associated with the abnormal BMI. Including cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes (CDC, 2017).

Without students’ trust and participation, the progression of the initiative will not be successful. As observed, it took approximately 2 sessions to gain the students’ initial trust; therefore it is essential for the program to last at least 6 weeks. Moreover, nursing students must understand the specific population they are serving, be culturally sensitive and aware of personal prejudices and biases. Upon trust initiation, the next goal is to achieve high participation rate above 90% during each session. Classes should be interactive, free of medical jargon and easy to follow.
